Merry Christmas Everyone!

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River is low and clear and certain areas still remain frozen.   With all activities of Christmas some anglers are still venturing out to do some fishing on the Kitimat River.

Dec 24 Even with the Christmas Festivities, Ariel Kuppers, Mitch Lupick and Travis James managed to sneak out and do a little Trout fishing on the Kitimat River.  They managed to land 15 to 20 Trout ice fishing in Goose Creek.  Ariel also said that a family showed up to fish but they did not have an ice auger so Ariel and his group kindly gave up the holes they had drilled.  Well done Ariel, Mitch and Travis.  Not only did you guys display some awesome angler etiquette but you also demonstrated the Christmas spirit of sharing.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Although there was some activity on the Kitimat River prior to Christmas there was very little activity on the Douglas Channel.  There are a few boats planning some Winter Chinook fishing during the holidays.  Stay Tuned!

Christmas to me personally is a very Special time to spend with family and friends.  I am extremely grateful for my families good health and well being and our thoughts and prayers go out to those who are not as fortunate.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the Very Best in the New Year from our entire Family, Store Staff.and Guides and Charters.

Good Health and Good Fishing!

Sincerely

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River completely froze over in certain areas from last week’s sub zero temperatures.  The temperatures early this week were also below zero but it has started to warm up towards the latter part of the week.

The Trout fishing conditions were challenging but with a little ingenuity a couple of hardcore anglers managed to get out fishing.

Dec 15 Ariel Kuppers and Justin Lowes, two Associate Guides for Reliable Guide and Charters were out doing a little personal Trout fishing on the Kitimat River.  They were actually doing some ice fishing for Trout in Goose Creek a tributary of the Kitimat River.  Some would say, “they are crazy to fish in sub zero temperatures” Dressed in snow pants and insulated Gore-Tex and armed with an ice auger and a barbecue, Ariel and Justin had a great day of fishing landing 13 Trout.

Summary:  There are still plenty of Trout in the Kitimat River but I suspect most anglers will be busy with Christmas activities for the next few days.  Anglers who do venture out, please be careful around the ice!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

City Centre Hardware and Sporting Goods Instore Derby winner: Largest Halibut, Three generations of the Losier family landed this 86lb Halibut in the Douglas Channel Aug 16, 2009.  Jacque Losier and his son Colby and father Roger landed this Halibut with a Gibbs Spreader Bar and Gibbs Halibut Leader baited with a Herring. The Losiers won a Redl Sports’ Sea King Halibut Rod and an Ambassadeur 10,000C Reel.  Congratulations to the Losiers!

Summary: The Douglas Channel has received high winds and below zero temperatures which has deterred even the most hard core of anglers.  A few boaters are waiting for the weather to improve to catch some Winter Chinook.

Saltwater Anglers wishing to participate in a Regional event, the Prince Rupert Lions Club is hosting their “Blue Knuckle Derby” on Dec 27th.  Please see J and E’s Fishing Report for details.

Thank You everyone who provided photos and info for this Fishing Report.

I would like to extend a Very Merry Christmas and All the Best in the New Year to our readers, valued customers and clients from our entire Family, Store Staff, Guides and Charters.

I would especially like to extend a Special Christmas Greeting to Noel Gyger and his family.  Through Noel’s efforts to produce this Regional Fishing Report, we are able to share the slender and beauty of the North West with readers from around the world.

May everyone be Blessed with Good Health and Good Fishing in the New Year!

KITIMAT RIVER: We received sub zero temperatures for the last few weeks and there are areas of the Kitimat River that have iced over or completely frozen.  The Cable Car pool is one of the fishing spots that has completely frozen over.   Ariel Kuppers reports that the ice in the pool is 7 inches thick.   Anglers are warned to be very careful when fishing on or near the ice.  Please take the precautions of fishing with a partner and testing the ice on the edges before proceeding to deeper water.  Please take a moment to exercise common sense to ensure Safe and enjoyable fishing trips.

Dec 13 Kitimat River Pump House.  As you can see in the photos the Kitimat Pump House Pool in the Kitimat River is exceptionally low with some areas completely frozen while other areas are still free flowing. This is typical of current conditions throughout the Kitimat River.

Summary With the deeper pools completely frozen, Ariel Kuppers and some of his fishing partners plan to do some Ice fishing in these spots.  Ariel plans to try “Ice Fishing on the Kitimat on his days off this week.  Other anglers are also planning to do some Trout fishing on the Kitimat River.  Stay Tuned!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The Kitimat Harbour Fishery still provides opportunities to fish for Winter Chinook when weather permits.  The results are a little spotty this week because there has been very little bait fish reported.  The weather was very nice earlier in the week with clear, sunny days and calm seas although the temperature has hovered around zero degrees and below.

Dec 12 I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friend Dale Barge in his 16` Aluminum “Rough Water” open boat for Winter Chinook.  Dale`s ”Rough Water” is an excellent seaworthy boat but it is an open boat and we were fishing on a clear, calm but cold morning.  The key to enjoyable fishing is to dress appropriately to the weather and the type of boat.  Dale wore his Mustang Floater Coat and Pants with thermal layers underneath and I wore my Bare Neoprene Waders and a Mustang Floater Jacket.  I also layered underneath with Bare`s Climate Control Plus fleece under my waders which kept me very warm.

I believe I stayed warmer than Dale by wearing my Bare Neoprene waders plus I had another advantage provided by Nordic Gear Inc:

Nordic Gear produces a product called Lectra Gloves that are battery operated heated gloves.  These are awesome!  They heat your hands higher than body temperature and the heat dissipates and also warmed my arms.

Although we stayed warm, we only managed to hook 2 Chinook, we weren’t able to land either one but we did catch some Crab.  Such is fishing!

Summary Whether fishing the River from shore or fishing the Saltwater in an open boat, I found that Neoprene waders keep me a lot warmer than other options.  I love my Bare Neoprene waders because staying warm is the key to enjoyable winter fishing.  I absolutely love my Lectra Heated gloves. A few years ago I may have laughed at them, not now.  They are awesome!

Winter Chinook fishing will continue throughout the winter and can be outstanding when the bait fish show up in the Kitimat Harbour. It is unpredictable when the bait fish show up because they just show up whenever they decide to show up.  The Winter Chinook follow the bait fish and when the bait fish are in the harbour, the Winter Chinook fishing can be exceptional.  Stay tuned to this report for updates!

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat weather was sunny and clear early in the week and some anglers managed to get to do some Trout fishing with good results.

The Lower Dike, Goose Creek and the Big Pool at Cable Car were the Hot Holes this week.  Cable Car was reported to have lots of small Trout.

Mid week in Kitimat we received some light snow falls followed by some rain which melted most of the Snow.

During the latter part of this week we received Sunny, Clear and some very Cold weather.  It dropped to below zero at times.

Float plus Worms

Equals One Happy Seven Year old Boy and One proud Father

Dec 1 Jacques Losier reports “My son Colby Age 7 caught some incredible Cutthroats. He caught these 20 inch plus fish with a pink worm and a real worm. He landed at least 15 to 20 fish all in the 11 to 13 inch range. Awesome day of fishing!”

Wow!  These are some very nice Trout.  Well done Colby!  And at Age 7!  It is always refreshing to report a Father and Son sharing the passion of fishing and these are special times that Colby will never forget.  Well done Dad!  Thank You for taking the time out of your busy life to send me the pictures

Summary The Trout fishing on the Kitimat River is still very good but right now it is very cold.  Please dress warm!  The most popular spot during this cold spell is the Cable Car pool.  Anglers can simply drive down to the pool, walk less than 50′  and fish.  If it gets too cold, anglers can simply walk back to their vehicles and warm up or go home.

There are not a lot of bigger Trout reported in the Cable Car pool this week but the added feature of being able to warm up is something to consider especially if you are fishing with the kids.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The Winter Chinook fishing in the Kitimat Harbour is difficult to determine as only one boat was reported fishing the Harbour this week.

Nov 1 Wes Owens took my brother Brian and my twin brother, Rick Wakita out fishing for Winter Chinook and to catch some Dungeness Crab. I asked Wes not to try too very hard to catch any fish for my brothers because of our ongoing Sibling rivalry.  For readers that have brothers you may be able to relate to the normal competitive nature between brothers.  Brothers can be competitive in some cases but if you add the fact that we were all born the same year,  (Brian was born in January and my twin, Rick and I were born in November).  It get’s a little too competitive but it is all in good fun, most of the time!

I am happy to report that they didn’t catch any Winter Chinook. :-) They did however catch their limit of Crab with the help of the Ace Line Hauler and Redl Sports Distributor’s Crab Traps with upgraded gates. It is such a simple but very effective upgrade.  There have been many frustrating moments over the years when you pull the Crab trap and the bait is gone, the gates are stuck up and the trap is empty.  Well Done Redl Sports!

Both my brothers loved pulling the traps with the Ace Line Hauler and they did catch a lot of Crab but “What’s Up” with the FiFI orange gloves? :-)

Summary The Douglas Channel will produce Winter Chinook in the Kitimat Harbour when the weather warms up a little and more boaters are able to get out to fish for them.  The key to catching Winter Chinook is to find them as they are moving around looking for baitfish.   Once they are located is it fairly easy to catch them in pretty good numbers.

Noel and I intended to fish with Wes Owens this weekend but sub zero weather postponed our trip.  With the wind chill factor the temperature could drop to -20 degrees or lower.  The sub zero temperatures can cause problems with the steering or shifting problems or the boat may have trouble starting.  Sometimes staying warm and avoiding situations is the best decision.  Stay Tuned!

Reliable Guide and Charters is pleased to announce that we have donated a Drift Boat Trip for Noel Gyger’s New promotion.  Anyone signing up their friends, family or fishing partners to Noel’s Mailing list for these Fishing Reports will be entered into a draw for a Free Driftboat Trip for 3 down the Kitimat River.  Please click on this link for details. WEEKLY FISHING REPORT November 22 to November 29, 2009

November 30, 2009

The photo of week shows Ron Wakita and Good friend, Noel Gyger with a Kitimat ocean feeder “Winter Spring” (Chinook-King) Salmon landed in the Kitimat Harbour on Friday, November 27, 2009.  The fish weighed 24-pounds.  Noel made a video clip of this catch.  Please scroll down to Nov 27 in the Douglas Channel section for a direct link to the video.  Hope you enjoy it!

KITIMAT RIVER: Trout Anglers who are getting out fishing are still being rewarded by some good fishing. Layering with quality fleece is the key to staying warm and Gore-Tex is the key to staying dry.  Helly Hansen, Simms and Cloudviel are some of the quality products in fleece and layering to stay warm.  Redl Sports, Trophy XL, Bare and Simms are some of the quality Gore-Tex products available at different price points to help anglers stay dry.  Staying warm and dry is the key to enjoyable fishing trips in the North West.

Worms and small lures were the most productive methods.  Fly fishing this week was not as productive as it has been. Some Fly Fishers think that the Trout have gone into the deeper, slower moving pools.

Nov 24 Ariel Kuppers, Justin Lowes and their friend Travis James fished the Kitimat with their Fly rods.  Fly fishing was not very productive and Justin landed one Cutthroat Trout using tackle at the end of their trip.  Justin was using the “Worm Combo”.

Nov 25 Ariel Kuppers, Justin Lowes and Travis James landed 9 Cutthroat on the upper Kitimat River geared up with the Trout Combo.  The “Worm Combo” is a Trout rig developed by Pat Oliver.  The “Worm Combo” is a 3″ Pink Bubble Gum Worm with a piece of a Dew Worm put on to the same hook.  It is best fished with a Gibbs Float adjusted so that the worms are just above the river bottom.

Pat Oliver was an employee of our tackle store and an Associate Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters who has relocated in Vancouver.  Pat has moved to bigger and better opportunities in the big city but the legacy of his “Worm Combo” lives on in Kitimat.

Congratulations on some great Trout fishing to Justin, Ariel and Travis with special recognition to Pat’s “Worm Combo”.

Summary One angler commented, “that it didn’t seem to matter which  Gibbs 3/16 oz. Crocs he used as long as it was 3//16oz.”  All the colours worked.

Ariel, Justin and Travis caught a bunch with the “Worm Combo”  Other anglers had good results fishing a Dew Worm on its own while others had good results using Berkley’s Power Bait 3″ Bubble Gum Worm without the Dew worm.

Ariel said that, “we counted 15 Eagles perched in the trees on Wednesday and we caught a lot of Trout that day.  One of the Trout we caught had scratches on it from an Eagle’s talons” Smart Money this week was to use a Worm of some kind or a Gibbs 3/16 oz. Croc and to fish where the Eagles fish!

Nov 24 Special Report Glen Kilcup and his good friend Mike Primeau were Steelheading and Glen had these comments,

Glen

“Well I finally convinced my good buddy Mike Primeau from Terrace to take a chance, and upgrade to some nice equipment. He purchased a Shimano Calcutta 400TE and he put it on one of my all time favorites, a nice 10′ 6 steelhead rod from St Croix, wild river series. If you know anything about reels, you know this is some of the best and it goes well with the totally affordable rod. All items were purchased from my good friend at City Center Hardware, Ron Wakita. The day, and the new rod didn’t disappoint as together with flies and spoons, we landed 9 Steelhead, 1 nice Dolly and lost a couple here and there. There were only 2 other anglers on the river that we saw, and foot prints were not evident as most of the runs hadn’t been touched today.

Mike

The fish were OK.  Not seeing a lot of larger fish this year or the numbers on a consistent basis. Top left was a Gibbs Koho 55 blue scale with red stripe.

Oh ya…another note to your editorial…Mike caught ALL does yesterday and I caught ALL Bucks! That usually happens with Bonnie and I!”

Well done Glen and Mike.  Very nice fish!  Congratulations on a great day of Steelheading!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Nov 22 I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friend and Charter operator, Wes Owens on Sunday, despite that the weather forecast was calling for snow and some high winds for the weekend.  We canceled our fishing trip with our good friend Noel Gyger that we had planned for Saturday based on the forecast.

Sunday morning, Wes made a trip to the Marina to ensure his boat was secured because of the forecasted snow and windy conditions.  While he was at the Marina he looked out into the Kitimat harbour and water was like glass without a ripple.  Wes called me to join him to fish for some winter Chinook and do a little Crabbing.  Within half an hour we were fishing in mirrored water conditions with Blue sky above us. We both commented at the awesome weather conditions and how could the “weather guy” have gotten the forecast so wrong.   We lost one Winter Chinook and we harvested 12 Dungeness Crab but we put back 32 other keepers.  We didn’t find the numbers of Winter Chinook we were looking for but we sure found a bunch of Crab.  I felt bad for Noel because we intended to catch some Cab for Noel’s lovely wife Gail, during the trip we had cancelled due to the incorrect forecast.  In the weather guy’s defense we received the wind and snow that he had forecast late Sunday night. The Marine weather guys don’t usually get it wrong.

Nov 22 Jason Bunn reports hooking three “Shakers” on Sunday in the Kitimat Harbour.  Jason said they were all small and he only spent a couple of hours.

Nov 27 6:00 AM Friday morning I awoke to a call from my good friend Wes Owens saying the weather was good and we should head out fishing

I called Noel and we scheduled the trip for 8:00 AM.  We set the Crab traps and by 8:45 we had lines in the water. By 10:45 we had hooked 3 Winter Chinook landing a 24lb and a “Shaker” (a very small feeder Chinook) which we released and lost another.  Any readers wishing to view the Video Noel produces of this 24lb Chinook please click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h1N9aw9MyQ We decided to head back to the Crab traps and try to get me to work by noon.

After harvesting 17 keepers with the help of the Ace Line Hauler Crab and Prawn Puller I am pleased to announce I made it to work at 1:00 PM which is noon in Fisherman’s time.

The Stars of our trip were the Gibbs Highliner UV Flasher with the green strip and the Dark purple True Roll Lure.  This set-up hooked all three Winter Chinook this morning and hooked last weekend’s Chinook at 55′. When I spoke to Dan Milanese (owner of True Roll) he said his favorite colour was dark purple.  Thank You for the tip Dan!  The dark purple True Roll Lure rocked in a very short time!  Dark Purple is now my favorite colour for Kitimat Winter Chinook and it will be the first lure in the water on our next trip.

The other Star of our trip was the Ace Line Hauler.  Built West Coast Tough, Vartan Chorbajian (owner) has developed the best Crab and Prawn trap puller on the market, in my opinion.  When you fish with older and wiser fishing partners it is important to have the “Right tools for the job”.  When we approached the traps my older and wiser fishing partners had strategically positioned themselves with Wes at the wheel and Noel with a camera leaving me to pull the traps.  Simply turning out the bolt of the Scotty Electric Downrigger and securing the Ace Line Hauler with a pin, in seconds you can switch from trolling to pulling Crab traps.  With the lifting power of a 100lbs at 100 feet per minute the Ace Line Hauler makes pulling the Crab traps as easy as steering the boat or taking pictures. :-)

Noel, Wes and I are also pleased to report that the Crab promised to Mrs. Gyger last weekend was delivered today.  Bon Appetite Gail!

Summary The Winter Chinook will continue all winter and when the Herring are in the harbour the Winter Chinook fishing can be outstanding. The beauty of this fishery is that once you are out of the marina, you put the lines out and you are fishing in minutes. Noel and I are also planning to do some Tackle testing for our friends at Baitrix, Rhys Davis and Lyman as I just received some more samples of their new products. Any boaters wishing to try some of their new products please feel free to contact me in the store. 250 632 3522 or email wakita@telus.net I can also pass on the tips given to me by the Tackle manufacturers. Gord from BaitrixTom from Rhys Davis, Colin from Lyman and Rob from Gibbs are all avid anglers who all share our passion for fishing. They are also the best source of the finer details of how to best fish their products.

Another note is that the Crabbing has been really good for this time of year.  Noel, Wes and I did very well (17 keepers)in a 3 hour set on Friday and Sam Avila of Ocean Breeze Charters also had similar results during his last outing for Crab. Stay Tuned!

We are booking for the 2010 season. Any interested anglers please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca

WEEKLY FISHING REPORT November 15 to November 22, 2009

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

Merry Christmas Everyone!

KITIMAT RIVER: We are starting the typical routine of winter in Kitimat as we received multiple days of snow this week.  Soon we can expect to wake to the sounds of the grader wind-rolling the snow to the middle of the street followed shortly after by the sounds of the Snow Blower.  The Amber rotating lights flashing across the bedroom curtains also signals having to get up earlier to allow for shoveling the driveway and cleaning the snow off the truck. Such is life in the North West.

Nov 18 Kitimat River Pump House Pool. Even with the Snow Fall the Kitimat River is exceptionally low and clean.  For readers who are familiar with the Pump House pool you will notice that you can actually wade across the entire river with boots.  The high water has shifted the gravel and created a gravel bar across the river.  It may not stay this way but it is unbelievable how the power of the water effects the river. The upper Kitimat also has some major changes as well.  We will keep anglers updated via this fishing report.

Summary The river conditions are very good despite the snow.  The Trout fishing will continue to be good throughout the winter but dress warm.  Layering is always a good idea and keeping the fishing trips to comfortable durations will ensure productive and enjoyable outings.

Nov 17 Special Report Ariel Kuppers was fishing the Copper River with his good friends Derrick Downey and Ted Riel.  They landed 12 Steelhead and many others lost.  Wow!  What an awesome day of Steelheading!  Congratulations Guys!

Ariel was using a Sage VT2 Spey Rod with a Ross CLA 6 Fly Reel with Rio Skagit 650gr Fly Line and Ariel’s own version of a Purple Egg Sucking Leech with a trailing hook.  Ariel comments that the key ingredient in the fly was the Pearlescent strands of Krinkle Mirror Flash distributed by Fly Angler in Surrey B.C. Ariel started Fly fishing with a Spey rod this year and is already producing some outstanding results.  Well done!

Anglers Beware that there is active logging and logging truck traffic on the Copper River logging road.  A radio with the Truckers channel is a good idea or simply wait and follow a logging truck up the road.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: With the snow and winter conditions there has not been a lot of action on the waters of the Douglas Channel during the week so I thought I would talk a little about the new lures on the market and the distribution of fishing tackle from Manufacturers to Distributors to Dealers and then to Anglers.

I believe every angler goes through different phases in their Angling experience.  As an angler just starting off, like most anglers we are influenced by a mentor.  In my case, my father, and usually I used the tackle that he used or that he gave me to use.  Other anglers may be initially introduced to fishing by other relatives perhaps even by a grandmother as was the case that I featured in one of my previous fishing reports. Or it could have been a friend or business associate, neighbor or even the local tackle dealer.

As I got older I still had tendency to use the lures that are proven and true simply because they have worked in the past.  At some point, I believe every angler goes through an experimental stage where you try all the new lures that hit the market.  You start buying and trying the new latest and greatest all in the quest to catch more fish.  I guess I never grew out of this phase but all the while keeping some loyalties to the proven favorites.

As an angler, a Guide/Charter operator and as a Tackle dealer I find myself in a unique position to continue to test new lures.

As an avid angler who was born and raised fishing in the North West provides archives of fishing info based on personal fishing experiences.  I have kept notes and logs over the years complete with photos that have captured the catch results.

As a Fresh Water Guide and Salt water Charter operator gives me the opportunity to work with some of the finest anglers in our area both fresh and salt water.  All of my associates are very skilled anglers who bring their own set of archived fishing info and they are also eager to test new products.

Alison Obrecht: Marketing Manager Gibbs Delta      Colin Redisky: Lyman Lures

Dan Milanese: True Roll Lures Tom Davis: Rhys Davis

As a Tackle Dealer I have the opportunity to attend the Redl Sports Distributor Tackle Show every year where the Fishing Manufacturers set up their booths to show their new products and for dealers to place orders. The Redl Show also provides an opportunity to speak to the manufacturers that produce the new lures.  It is a great opportunity to talk face to face with the people who design and make the various lures.  These conversations are also enhanced with subsequent emails and phone calls to clarify any issues.  Displayed above are some of the names and faces of the folks who work hard to produce quality fishing lures to help satisfy our addiction to catch fish.  Also worthy of note is that these are all BC based Fishing Tackle manufactures.

As the Fishing tackle industry has expanded with the growth and popularity of Sport fishing, new manufacturers have entered the Industry with new and exciting products lines.  Existing Manufacturers are continuously expanding their product lines with new colors, sizes and actions.  Lures are now being enhanced with Impregnated scents, Ultra Violet, E chips and the list goes on and on…  For the purpose of this section of the Fishing Report I have focused on the Lures relevant to our Winter Chinook fishery in the Douglas Channel.

Baitrix, Rhys Davis, Lyman and True Roll are the lures that I have chosen to test in our Kitimat Harbour Winter Chinook fishery. I have already tied up some of these lures with Gibbs UV enhanced flashers and Gibbs Farr Batter Flashers.  Noel and I were going to do a little tackle testing on Saturday for winter Springs but weather conditions postponed our trip.  Stay Tuned

KITIMAT RIVER: Fishing in the North West this time of year goes as the weather goes.  Usually the weather is nice and sunny during the week when most folks have to work and then when the weekend finally arrives, the weather turns.  Such is the case this week but there were a couple of saving graces for local Trout fishers.

Firstly, Kitimat has a shift working community so some anglers had days off during the good weather.  The other saving grace was that November 11th offered opportunity for Remembrance and some time off with some nice weather to do some Trout fishing on the Kitimat River.  Many Trout anglers took advantage of the good weather this week and got out and fished the Kitimat River.

Nov 9 Brian Apps fishing with his young son Brendan landed 15 Trout but only kept this beauty.  They were fishing with traditional bobber and worms and Brendan landed them all.  Well done Brendan!  It is always refreshing to witness Father and son starting into the fishing program at such a young age.  Brian said, “Brendan kept catching so many Trout on his rod that I didn’t have time to put mine together.”  Well done Brian!

Summary Sometimes the old proven and true methods still works the best.  The old style red and white float with a worm still produces plenty of Trout. It is also an easy method for young anglers to learn to fish.

Trout fishing will continue to be good throughout the winter when the weather permits.  Flyfishing for the Trout is also very productive.

Special Report for Nov 14 I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friends Noel Gyger and Glen Kilcup on the Kalum River, Saturday morning.  Although the weather and wind was far from optimum it is always nice to fish with good friends.  We managed to land one Steelhead and a few Coho before we got literally blown off the water.  Some of the Coho looked in pretty good condition.  All fish were released.  Any interested readers wishing to view the video that Noel produced please click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFu7j389-WI

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

The few Salt water anglers that left their boats in the water for the winter and have ventured out have been rewarded.  Crab and Prawns are still plentiful and the Winter Springs are in the Kitimat Harbour.

Nov 9 Sam Avila went prawning and caught 5 lbs of Prawns.  Well done!  Maria will be happy.  Bon Apetite!  Please feel free to call Noel or me if you need any help <grins>

Nov11 Ferd Wuensche fishing out in the Kitimat harbour with his relatives hooked 5 winter Chinook and landed 3.  Ferd says, “if we put in a little more time and fished through the slack tides we would have gotten more because the winter Chinook are definitely in.”  Congratulations Ferd and his family. Great news to hear that the Winter Chinook are in the harbour!

Summary With the first signs of the Winter Chinook fishery, more boats will be anxious to get out.  Some anglers prefer to harvest these Chinook this time of year because they say that these Chinook have a better taste and a higher fat content.  Crabbing and Prawning will also be productive throughout the winter.  We are indeed fortunate to live in a community where we can harvest fresh sea food 20 minutes from our homes.  Stay tuned to this fishing report as the Winter Chinook fishery starts to heat up.

Thank you to everyone who provided info and photos for this report.

COHO PHOTO OF THE SEASON: JULIE WAKITA holding the COHO that won the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Derby.

After a great Coho season and the Kitimat River closed Oct 31st for retention of Coho.  This is my favorite photo from this year’s Coho season.

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

October flyer for Wakita Home Hardware

KITIMAT RIVER: The Kitimat River dropped early in the week but not a lot of fishing activity except for Morris Evans.  The remainder of the week we received some typical fall weather with rain showers mixed with the odd sunny period.  The river accordingly was up and down but for the most part fishing conditions were marginal.

Nov 3 Morris Evans fishing the Pump House pool for Cutthroat or maybe the odd Steelhead.  Morris has been a fixture on the Kitimat River for as long as I can remember.  If anyone is out fishing the Kitimat it will be good old Morris.  Tuesday was a classic example of Morris in his usual spot at the Kitimat Pump House.

You know you have had an excellent Coho season when…..we receive reports that Moore Creek are full of Coho as Brad Riley witnessed during last week’s high water.  The creek was full of spawning Coho….  Chad, one of my hockey buddies who work’s with the Railway reports all kinds of Coho swimming and spawning in all the ditches along the railway tracks.  Kind of cool observations and definitely signs that confirms that we had an excellent Coho return on the Kitimat this year.   Anglers are reminded that Coho is closed for retention as of Oct 31st.

When the weather permits there will be some good Trout fishing on the Kitimat River. There are some very avid Trout fishers in the area who are always on the watch for the opportunity of good river conditions.  When the conditions improve using worms and flies will be the more productive methods for the Kitimat River Trout.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL:

Nov 3 Ferd Weunche was out trolling and was able land two beautiful Winter Chinook.  They hooked five but only landed two.  “They were not big” said Ferd but “perfect for the barbecue”.  Well done Ferd.  Sorry no photos, Ferd promised to send me pictures but he forgot to take them.  So all I have to show for this portion of this Fishing Report is a picture of the bait that Ferd was using.  If I can’t show what he caught I can at least show what he was using.

Summary: The weather conditions have improved in the Douglas Channel this week especially the wind.  More boaters will be out trolling for Winter Chinook.

I am looking forward to trying the new Ultra Violet (UV) Flashers that the Flasher manufacturers are offering.

I have chosen Hot Spot, Oki and Gibbs flashers to test in the Kitimat Harbour Winter Chinook Fishery. Stay Tuned!

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: Earlier this week the Kitimat River was in pretty good shape and anglers were able to get out and fish for Trout.

Oct 27 Ariel Kuppers was out fishing on Tuesday and managed to hook five Trout but was not able to land any.  Ariel intended to keep one Trout which he had planned to be the main course for his lunch.  Ariel said, “I very seldom keep any Trout and I never take a bag, the one time I take a bag and want to keep one, I can’t land one!”  I guess Ariel must have settled for hamburger or chicken because fresh Trout didn’t happen…The photo is a sympathy photo of a Trout that Ariel caught and released last week.  The rest of the Trout that are reported in this report are the ones that got away…..Such is life in the North West.

Oct 27 Kitimat Pump House Pool

Oct 29 We received our first snow fall but the Kitimat River was still in good shape.

Oct 30 Almost overnight the Kitimat River rose 7 or 8′ according to the River height station.  Wow!  Radley Park was flooded and the river was in the trees. (Photo Credits to Jennifer Gunyon)

Oct 31 The Kitimat River dropped 6′ in 24 hours.  We can get drastic fluctuations in river height during this time of year but the change in heights this week was unbelievable!  Only a few times in my lifetime of living in Kitimat have I seen the river come up this high.  The amazing feature of this week’s occurrence was how fast the Kitimat rose and how fast she dropped.  The high tides would also have an influence but all I can say is Wow!  The Saving Grace is that no life or property that I am aware of was lost due to this freak episode.  Thank Goodness!

Summary: With the Kitimat River higher than high, she was also naturally very dirty and fishing was not an option in the latter part of this week.  We could only marvel at the power and force of the high water as we watched 60′ Spruce trees raging down the Kitimat River.  After marveling at Mother Nature, the reality of life in the North West this time of year took precedent.  Checking Antifreeze levels, putting the lawn mower away and bringing out the snow blower and the list goes on.  After taking care of the change of season issues I spent some time preparing for when the rivers in the North West drop and become fishable.  One of the items on the “Things to do List” was to cure up some roe for this Fall/Winter Steelhead season on the Skeena and for the Spring Steelhead season on the Kitimat River.

Pautze BorX O Fire           Procure Bait Cure Redd Hot Double Stuff

I usually use Redd Hot Bait Cure made by Procure Inc. but I thought I would try this new product called BorX O’ Fire made by Pautzke Bait Company.  I intend to use a little of both and let the Steelhead decide which they prefer.  Stay tuned!

Tilia Food Saver Professional 11 Turbo

After I cure the roe, I usually vacuum seal the roe with Tilia Food Saver.  I love this machine!  Especially for the roe that I am curing for next spring’s Steelhead fishery on the Kitimat River.  The Right product and the Right tools for the job make an Anglers life a lot easier and a lot more productive.  The proof is in the pictures which I hope to have available for these Fishing Reports.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: With the enormous Rainfall we received, we also received some high winds that prevented even the most hard core boaters from venturing out in the Douglas Channel.  Most boaters made an extra trip down to the Marinas to check their boats, fire up the engines to charge their batteries and maybe tie on an extra dock line.

Anglers who leave their boats in the water for the Winter Chinook fishery are accustomed to checking their boats on a regular basis.  Such is Life in the North West!  We are all waiting for the Winter Chinook fishery to start.  Stay Tuned!

Octopus Siwash Open eye (for plugs, lures and jigs) are the two most popular hooks in this area for conventional/spinning gear.  Gamakatsu is the hook of choice by most angling guides. A barbless version of the Octopus is also available and very popular with the Conservation Officers.

Gamakatsu is the leading fish hook manufacturer in the world, dedicated to constantly researching its markets and developing unique products that meet the needs of fishermen.

The methods used in creating Gamakatsu hooks is what makes it so superior to all other brands. First, only the most premium grade of high carbon steel is used. This insures against any blemishes in the metal which can weaken the hook.

Secondly, Gamakatsu has the most advanced tempering system in the world. Every hook is heated to the exact temperature that is perfect for that particular style and size then cooled in oil. This process produces hooks which are super strong, but not brittle. It is extremely difficult to achieve a balance between strength and flexibility, and it took many years for Gamakatsu to perfect this process.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our sharpening process is the most modern in the world, and results in a perfectly conical point that is unequaled in sharpness.

WEEKLY FISHING REPORT October 18 to October 25, 2009

October 26, 2009

Photo of the Week: Ron Wakita with a very bright Kalum River doe Steelhead caught Saturday, October 24, 2009.  The fish was released after this quick photo.  This fish is a “star” in my latest video clip…see below.

I realize that this a Kitimat River Fishing report but this was such a nice Steelhead caught on the Kalum River fishing trip Noel Gyger that I thought I would share it in this report as photo of the week.

Fishing Report from:  Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters

KITIMAT RIVER: With a little rain that we received this week the Kitimat Creek (as we have called it lately) has started to flow at a level to be once again called the Kitimat River. The upside to very low water conditions is that anglers are able to find a bunch of fish grouped up in deeper pools and cut banks.  The challenge is to find them.  Many anglers fishing for Cutthroat Trout found them in good numbers and they also found lots of Coho stacked up in the same pools.

Oct 20 Dave Bergeron reports catching 9 Cutthroat.  Three of these were in the 2 to 3lb range. “Wow!”  He also reports catching Coho while he was float fishing for Trout.  Be careful Dave, some of these big Coho can put a big hurt on your Ultra light Trout Rod.  Dave was going to share some photos for this report but unfortunately they didn’t turn out.  Thank You for your efforts Dave and congratulations on your catch.

Oct 21 Ariel and Brandon landed 6 Trout and 5 Coho.  Ariel was Fly Fishing with his Spey Rod and Brandon was using a Spinning Rod.  Ariel was using a #2 Silver Dick Nite with Type 8 Rio Sink Tip.  Brandon was using a Gibbs Koho 45 Blue Illusion Lure.  Well Done Ariel and good job Son.

Oct 21 Dave Olsen and his fishing partner report catching lots of Trout in the Nalabila Stretch.  They also reported catching Coho while targeting Trout.

Oct 22 Greg Gardiner and James Wright report hooking a dozen Trout every time they went out this week.  The biggest was 18 inches.  They were using 3″ Berkley Power Worms and said that they fished “better than bait”.   Greg said that they had better success with pink bubble gum impregnated worms than with real worms.  The proof is in the results.  Well done Guys!

Summary: The majority of Coho on the Kitimat River have turned to their spawning colours with fewer and fewer bright Coho.  The Trout fishing on the Kitimat River has been excellent.  Many anglers have reported good results using a wide range of lures.  Float Fishing natural dew worms is still popular and now artificial worms such as Berkley’s Power Bait Worms are also catching some Trout.  The Dick Nite were also fishing very well for Trout and Coho also love them.  The Dick Nite Spoon is productive both on a Fly Rod and on a spinning rod.  The Kitimat 32 Silver Red was also a hot lure this week.  Fly fishing with minnow patterns continue to be excellent.  Most Fly fishers usually tie their own version of a minnow pattern to catch Trout on the Kitimat River.  Some anglers reported that the flies out fished tackle although they caught Trout using both types of gear.  I subscribe to the theory of doing “whatever the fish tell you to do”.

There are a mixture of a lot of Cutthroat, Dolly Varden and Rainbow Trout in the Kitimat River right now available for anglers to catch using whatever preference of Gear type.  The weather and river conditions will soon be a major factor so my advice is to get out and catch them while the conditions are good.  Weather and river conditions in the North West can change almost by the hour.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There is not a lot to report from the Douglas Channel but a few boaters were talking about doing some fishing this weekend.  The target was for Halibut or Crabbing with another boater testing the Winter Chinook fishing in the Kitimat Harbour. With the expectation of the up coming Winter Chinook Fishery in the Kitimat Harbour I am excited about two Lures that I saw while at the Redl Sports Distributor Dealer Show.

These are the True Troll Lures and Rhys Davis Strip Teasers Holders with Baitrix’s new imitation Herring Strip.

The True Troll Lures have a bunch of new colours that I am looking forward to trying out for Winter Chinook.  True Troll lures really got my attention in Coho Season and has become one of my favorite lures that has moved to the top drawer of the tackle box.  They were dynamite for Coho!  They should also be good for Winter Springs.  Stay Tuned for Noel Gyger’s new “Product Profile” section.

Rhys Davis is one of the most popular bait holder lures fished in the Douglas Channel and has been around for decades.  Rhys Davis has teamed up with Baitrix, a manufacturer of imitation Herring bait.  Baitrix has developed a Herring Strip imitation that will fit Rhys Davis’s Super Herring Teaser and a Rhys Davis Large Strip Teaser.  Trolling Herring Strip has always been one of the most popular lures of choice for Coho and Winter Springs in the Douglas Channel for years.  Berry’s Bait stopped distributing frozen Herring Strip a few years ago and Herring Strip was no longer available.  Accordingly Herring Strip was not fished as much because anglers were now forced to make their own strip by cutting up whole Herring.  A few anglers continued to make their own strip but most switched to fishing anchovies or Herring minnows.  Fishing Strip is back!  Baitrix is very life like and can be impregnated with scent to complete the disguise.  They are more durable than actual Herring strip and more important, they will be readily available on the market soon.  Stay tuned to this report and Noel’s Product profiles section for the fishing results of the samples that Gord McKay from Baitrix and Tom Davis from Rhys Davis kindly gave to me to test.

I am looking forward to fishing both True Roll and Baitrix with Rhys Davis Strip Teaser holders in the Kitimat Harbour Winter Chinook Fishery.  Stay Tuned!

Special Report:

I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friend and associate, Noel Gyger on the Kalum River Saturday morning.  As usual we had an excellent outing looking for our first Steelhead fishing together on the Kalum.  Mission accomplished as we landed a beautiful Steelhead, a small Coho and a bunch of Trout.  I consider Noel as the foremost authority on Fishing in the North West, especially the Kalum and he predicts that Steelhead will get better in the coming weeks. Thanks for a great trip Noel.  Hope we can get out again!

I really enjoyed spin fishing with this “new” super braided line. It was engineered for spinning reels.  The smooth coating on the line slips through the guides quietly and effortlessly. No more wind knots and tip wraps.  My casting distance improved and I had instant hook-sets.  It is small in diameter but extremely strong.  I snagged up and had to pull so hard to break it that I pulled my anchored jet boat half way across the river.  It finally broke. Actual break strength is 53 lbs. You will recover more jigs and lures as the hook usually straightens out.  I fished all day and lost only one jig. So outstanding is Dura Cast’s performance that the line won the Best New Braided Line award at the prestigious European Fishing Tackle Trade Association show in June of 2009. Dura Cast will revolutionize your experience.

WEEKLY FISHING REPORT October 11 to October 18, 2009

October 25, 2009

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Brandon Wakita holding an 18′ Kitimat River Cutthroat

Brandon was fishing with Ariel Kuppers on Oct 14th 2009

Cast on link below to view latest flyer:

KITIMAT RIVER: Fall in the North West is visually noticeable by the typical changing of the colour of the leaves and the typical changing of the colour of the Kitimat River Coho. Most of the Coho are noticeably changed to their spawning colours with the exception of some fresh Coho still making their way to the Kitimat River.

Some anglers have changed their focus to fishing for Cutthroat Trout while other anglers are fishing for both.

The Kitimat River was so low this week that Ariel and a few other anglers were calling it “Kitimat Creek”.

Oct 14 Ariel Kuppers, Travis James and my son Brandon landed 7 Cutthroat.  Two of these Cutthroat were 15″ and 18″.

Oct 15 Brian Seaby a local angler reports landing 9 Coho, 2 coloured and 7 fairly bright.

Oct 17 Five anglers were speaking to Ariel in our Tackle store who had really good success Coho fishing in the Nalabila Stretch.  They reported catching many bright Coho as well as a bunch that were coloured.

Many anglers still out fishing for Coho and Trout on the Kitimat River as evident by the number of vehicles parked along the highway this weekend.  Some anglers will fish the upper Kitimat by walking in from the highway and then fish their way down the Kitimat River.  They will then walk back out to the highway and walk up the side of the road back up to their truck. It is not common to see anglers with Coho sized rods as well as Trout or Fly rods. Such is the life when fishing the Kitimat this time of year.

The most productive lures this week were still the Gibbs Silver Hex 3/16 Crocs and the Koho 35 Copper, float fishing worms and flyfishing with minnow patterns.

The high number of reports of some bright Coho surprised me a little.  Usually there are few bright Coho still migrating in but apparently this year there appears to be more than normal.  This is a good thing and with some mild weather Coho fishing on the Kitimat River appears to have been extended.

Special Bulletin:

I had another awesome opportunity to fish with my good friend, Noel Gyger and my son, Brandon on the Kalum on Saturday.  We were hoping to catch some Steelhead and Coho on our trip.  We rigged up both float rods for Steelhead and Jigging rods for the Coho.  I lined up with a sample of Tuff Line’s new DuraCast Line that was given to me by Rex Nelson from Western Filament.  (Tuff Line’s parent company).   Tuff Line DuraCast proved to be an excellent line for Jigging for Coho. It made long casts effortlessly and quietly.  The perfectly round tri axial construction eliminated line twist and rod tip wrap which is sometimes an issue with some super braided lines.

The feature of Tuf-Line DuraCast that I liked the best was “Instant hook set” and amazing knot strength.  30lb knot strength with 8lb diameter.  Wow!  Thank You for the sample Rex, it helped create some wonderful memories of fishing with my good friend Noel and my son Brandon.

We didn’t hook any Steelhead but we were able to land and release a bunch of Coho with the help of Tuff Line Dura Cast.

Any readers interested in watching a video that Noel produced of our trip please click on the link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kyPvojL6rM

Another Special Bulletin

Glen Kilcup reports on one the coastal streams in the North West, “My Vancouver buddy Randy Wereshuck was here for a week and we were real fortunate for the weather to co-operate. With Colorado blades we smacked Coho and Steelhead at a few familiar spots. The Coho were in all the places they were supposed to be and the Steelhead were packed up in deeper pools because of lower waters. Got the jetboat out on some skinny waters and found that a long walk was much easier than the boat…” Congratulations Glen and Randy! Nice Fish!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: With the high winds this week very few boats ventured out on the waters of the Douglas Channel.  Accordingly there is very little to report with regards to fishing the Douglas Channel.  Some boaters expressed an interest in trying a little trolling for late Coho or Winter Chinook in the Kitimat Harbour when the wind conditions improve.  Other boaters were focused on getting the last fresh crab feed of the year.

Winter Chinook fishing usually starts any time now and will carry on throughout the winter.  It is a very difficult fishery to predict as it just happens when ever it happens.  The feeder Chinook follow the bait fish and whenever bait fish decide to wonder into the Kitimat Harbour as will the feeder Chinook.  When these feeder Chinook are in the Kitimat Harbour in good numbers it is an awesome fishery.  Stay Tuned.

Thank You to all the anglers who contributed info and photos to this report.

P.S. We have plenty of booking opportunities for the last part of this season for late Coho and Cutthroat Trout.  We are already starting to book for next year.  Any interested anglers please contact us at wakita@telus.net

Good Luck and Good Fishing!
