KITIMAT RIVER:

Go Canada! We are proud to be Canadian!

We like our fish to be Silver but our Olympic medals to be Gold!

Hockey is Canada’s Number One Game but Fishing in Kitimat and in the Northwest is our Number One pastime!

Typical for this time of year in the North West we received a mix of weather conditions. We had some rainy days, some sunny clear days and even a little snow but the Trout fishing continues to be good.

Feb 21 Martin Golhke landed a 15lb Steelhead under the Haisla Bridge. Martin was very excited describing his first Steelhead of the year. Congratulations Martin!

Feb 23 Ariel Kuppers landed this Kitimat River Dolly Varden on his Fly Rod using a pink worm pattern.  Ariel was fishing with his Dragonfly 9` 7 wt Rod and his Dragonfly Expedition 7/8 Fly reel.  A 5wt Rod is better suited for Trout but this time of year there is always the potential of hooking a Steelhead.  A 7wt would give Ariel a better chance of landing a Steelhead than a 5 wt which is why he used his 7wt rod.
Feb 24 Ariel Kuppers fly fishing the upper Kitimat landed a couple more Dolly Varden on a Fly.   It snowed in the morning but Ariel said, “it was really nice and sunny when he was out fishing”  It was nice to catch Trout but I think Ariel may also be looking for an early Steelhead on his Fly rod.
Feb 27 Eric Turcotte send me an email and a photo of his daughter, Rachel.  In Eric’s own words, “Here is a picture of Rachel, my 8y-old daughter, who caught a 2 pound Dolly Vardon on Saturday morning.”  Congratulations to Rachel and father.

SUMMARY: There was a few Steelhead landed and a few lost this week.  Trout fishing will continue to be good and we can expect more Steelhead on the Kitimat as we head into March.  Steelhead catch numbers on the Kitimat River can be outstanding in peak season.  With enhancement of Steelhead by the Kitimat River Hatchery we are fortunate to have one the best Spring Steelhead Fisheries in the area.  Stay Tuned!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Herring have been reported in the Kitimat Harbour more frequently this week but we still have not received many reports of Winter Chinook being caught.

We should be getting better results but I can only report the fishing as it is,  not how we would like it to be.  A couple of boats went down to the outer waters for the weekend looking for some King Crab.  Justin Lowes who is one of our Tackle store staff is in this group so I will share his results in this Fishing Report.
Thank You to everyone who has provided info or photos for this Fishing Report.

Fishing Report from: Fishawk Guiding, Kitimat/Terrace BC

Hi Noel, this weekend I took Mike Primeau and Todd Henry out to Prince Rupert, BC on the ocean and despite gale force wind warnings all week, which were false (it had been glass smooth out there for at least 3 days prior to our outing ) we had a great day. We bottom fished a few spots and got into a few quillback rockfish and we all caught a few big sculpins (bullheads)
Our plan for the day was to troll for springs. Mike nailed this nice little Halibut while trolling our spring spot and not too long after, I hit my spring. The day was calm all day which was quite rare for Rupert and fishing was a success. Calcutta reels and Berkley big game were the days choice of tools. Luhr Jensen flashers with rolling anchovies worked for the trolling. Jigging heavy buzz bombs caught the rest. Going out again soon…you should jump in sometime Noel!  Tight lines  Glen Kilcup, Fishawk Guiding

KITIMAT RIVER:

Blue Sky! Sunshine! Clean Water!  We have been receiving unbelievable weather this past week especially compared to the weather of a month ago when we were getting ice rain, sub zero temperatures and the river was frozen. Many anglers are happy to be out on the river enjoying the sunshine and catching some fish while others are just happy to be outside.

Feb 14 Ariel Kuppers was fishing with Trent Vines.  They landed 3 Cutthroat in the lower Kitimat River float fishing a Ruby Red 3″ rubber worm with a piece of Bubba’s Bait’s Dew worm.  This is a variation of the Kitimat Combo that Pat Oliver originated a few years ago.  Pat’s Kitimat Combo was a Pink 3″ worm with a piece of Dew worm.  Pat Oliver and Ariel Kuppers were very good friends and fishing partners.   They were also Associate Guides for Reliable Guide and Charters and they both love to fish every species that swim the Kitimat River.  Pat has moved to the lower mainland, but the legacy of his Kitimat Combo fishes on.
Feb 15 Trent Vines was speaking to an angler who had just finished drifting the lower Kitimat in his pontoon boat.  Trent didn’t get the anglers name but the angler said,” that he landed 2 Steelhead, one 12lb and a 16lb Steelhead”  The angler was hotshotting from his pontoon boat.  Thank You to Trent for the info and Congratulations to the unnamed angler.
Feb 16 Ariel Kuppers, Trent Vines and Travis James landed 3 Dolly Varden on the lower Kitimat River on Tuesday.  They were all fly fishing.  The most productive fly was a minnow pattern.
With the wonderful weather many anglers have been out fishing the Kitimat River.  The river is exceptionally low and clean and many anglers have reported that they have been able to see the fish but they were unable to catch them.  Ariel Kuppers reports that he had the best results just before dark and other anglers reported having better success in the deeper pools.
The weather is awesome!  The conditions are great!  There are lots of fish being caught!  Life in the Fishing world in Kitimat is Good.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The Killer Whales have been sighted in the Kitimat Harbour a few times this week.  The signs of Herring migrating into harbour have been evident for the past few weeks.  The Seagulls and Eagles have been showing up in larger numbers to feed on the Herring.  The Winter Chinook have also migrated into the harbour to feed on the Herring.  The Seals and Sea Lions are also grouping in larger numbers to feed on the Herring and Winter Chinook.  Now the Killer Whales are feeding on the Herring, Winter Chinook and the Seals.  Such is the natural evolution of the food chain in the Kitimat Harbour this time of year.

This is the theory part of the program, except Saltwater anglers have not been reporting a lot of Winter Chinook caught this week.  Some have geared up with Herring Jigs to catch some Herring while others are happy to catch Crab which is always a welcome treat in the Spring after a long winter without them.

Either way, all boaters who have ventured out have marveled at the wonderful weather and the spectacular sight of the Killer Whales.
Stay Tuned!

KITIMAT RIVER: We have received incredibly warm weather this past week.   The warm temperature combined with a few days of rain we received this week has melted large portions of the snow along the river banks. There is a feeling of “Spring” on the Kitimat River and many anglers are taking advantage of the nice weather to get out fishing.

Feb 9 Justin Lowes and James Botrokoff landed 15 Dolly Varden Trout and Justin lost what he estimated to be an 8lb Steelhead.  Justin lost the Steelhead on a doulbe egg pattern.

Takes a girl to land the biggest fish…

Feb 10 Ariel Kuppers fished with his girl friend, Nicolette and his friend Trent Vines.  They landed 5 Trout on the upper Kitimat River.
Feb 12 Trent Vines landed 4 Cutthroat and a Dolly Varden and lost a bunch more in the lower Kitimat River.
Feb 13 Ariel Kuppers went out for a couple of hours after work and landed one nice Cutthroat and lost a bunch more.
Summary The most popular methods for catching Trout on the Kitimat River this week was Fly Fishing or Float fishing worms.  The double egg pattern and the silver minnow are 2 patterns that have been productive for Trout.  Float fishing with the Gibbs 3/4″ X 4″ Float and Dew worms from Bubba’s Bait has also been productive.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: With the nicer weather more boaters are starting to venture out on the Douglas Channel.  There are plenty of signs of Herring but no Winter Chinook to report this week.  We received a few reports of boaters catching some Crab during the week. A few boaters have gone out for the weekend but have not yet returned to report their catch. Stay tuned.

The weather is great, the conditions are good and there are fish being caught!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
